Install on top of another distro/already existent *PBX?

Postby marksskram » Tue Oct 21, 2008 1:53 pm

is it possible to install the 1.5 beta GUI on top of a Cent OS server already running the latest stable version of Asterisk?

Thanks,

Yes

You can yum unistall freepbx (or many free-pbx) and yum install asterisk-gui I believe are the two you want.

My apologies:

yum remove freepbx

yum install asterisk-gui

-bk

(I think that is what you are asking for)

Interesting. I'm setting up a development PBX at work and am now wondering.. what's the advantage of AsteriskNOW versus installing CentOS on a server, then asterisk/digium drivers, and then a GUI or *-configuration helper?

Asterisk NOW seems like a great idea but my experience with niche OSes has been that if you change something or want to upgrade a component, everything breaks down and no longer plays nice.

Any insight as to why I should choose, and then back up my decision to use AsteriskNOW instead of the other approach?

Thanks!

The cool thing about AsteriskNOW 1.5 (CentOS) is that you can treat it like a normal PBX, and then use the rpms/yum to update.

You can also install out of SVN as well, just like a normal linux box.

Fair enough. Let's say I start working with AsteriskNOW 1.5(b) - how do updates to all of Asterisk/AsteriskNOW/etc. work? Will a simple `yum update`get me to the next version of AsteriskNOW or simply update asterisk, asterisk-addons, etc. and hope it all works with the GUI?

Thank you for fielding these questions!

The whole idea of us maintaining our part of the repository is so that you _can_ do that when there are new updates :) *yum update*

Can I add repositories to an already setup CentOS install? I think i'd rather start from scratch so I know exactly what's going on on this box.

Not sure if this is going to help, but just a quick google: http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories
