Asterisknow on centos 6?

Postby cbsys » Thu Sep 20, 2012 5:53 am

When will asterisknow be available for centos 6 ?

Centos 5 is getting very old now, and we need to upgrade!
I dont want to compile, I would prefer to use the asterisknow rpms

CentOS 5.x still has 2 years of support left in it.

There's no upgrade path between 5.x and 6.x.

We'll eventually do it, but it's not high priority right now.

I'm sorry that you see it that way, Malcolm.

I have 10 AsteriskNow-based virtual machines. Each of them consumes about 10% of one CPU core of my virtualisation hosts when doing absolutely nothing, with all services off. This is because CentOS 5 runs kernel 2.6.18, which is positively ancient by modern standards. By contrast, the VMs that we've built with Asterisk, FreePBX, and Ubuntu 12.04 use nearly no resources when idle.

Anybody else in the virtualisation/cloud computing game will have the same results, and they won't be able to use AsteriskNow under any serious workload. It is not a good flagship for Asterisk.

Just to be clear, when I say "all services off", I mean uptime of 0.00, with nearly no disk or network IO, and most services shut down. It's the kernel, and the kernel alone, responsible for the poor virtualisation performance.

I'm sorry we live in a world of constrained resources and limited time. ;)

I suspect this relates to "tickless" timing. I would have thought that VoIP under any reasonable loading would violate the assumptions behind tickless timing, as it would need regular timer wakeups.

Is your peak traffic << 1 erlang? (Traffic with direct media and no announcements, etc., might also avoid VoIP type timing requirements.)

I also suspect that most of the overhead is due to the VM and would show on any low latency low load application that was handling traffic.
